'Sante Fe' is the new 'Mexico'

2/27/2013

Sante Fe is a great place to get inspired, and on the other side, want to dance with some Native Americans. In the small downtown plaza, each store acts as its own gallery. Showing and selling art of 1 artist (fancy) or collectively showing from an array of local artists. Sante Fe, as other small towns like these, are welcoming and charming. Everyone was kind and everything was inspiring. Murals, turquoise belt buckles with amazing designs, paintings of chickens, Native Indian contemporary art - makes you want to get up and dance, then paint a self portrait riding a buffalo in the high dessert landscape.

We went to a couple of pueblos, some bare and some still inhabited. We got to explore the existing pueblos that were high on mountain cliff, the "Acoma Pueblo Tribe" (1 of 19 pueblo nations). It was an illuminating experience. The people here are proof of strength in suffering. Even after there home was taken over by Catholic Spanish conquistadors, they protected their values, rituals, and their connection with the earth while under the European whip.

Although the high desert snow of Sante Fe was challenging, it was a beautiful experience. We can't wait til next time.
